Specialist hospitals well represented in latest Advanced Foundation Trust streamlined assessment wave

Nine members of the Federation of Specialist Hospitals (FSH) have been selected to participate in NHS England’s latest wave of Advanced Foundation Trust (AFT) assessment.

AFT status is intended to recognise organisations demonstrating strong performance, quality and organisational capability, while providing greater strategic and operational autonomy, a more proportionate regulatory relationship and increased financial flexibility.

The prominence of specialist hospitals in the latest cohort reflects their track record of high performance. They routinely occupy the majority of the top ten places in the NOF league table, combining clinical excellence with strong research and innovation capability, supported by deep partnerships with the life sciences sector.

As the Government continues to implement the 10-Year Health Plan and take forward reforms through the Health Bill, specialist hospitals remain focused on supporting national priorities. Alongside delivering care for patients with some of the most complex, rare and chronic conditions, specialist providers are committed to contributing to elective recovery, attracting commercial clinical research, and developing innovative and efficient models of high-quality care.

The nine FSH members included in the latest AFT assessment wave are:

  • Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust
  • Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • The Christie NHS Foundation Trust
  • The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust
  • The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust
  • The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust
  • West London NHS Trust

We look forward to continuing to work in partnership with our members and policy makers to deliver the Government’s ambitions for the health sector and patients across the UK.
